The Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Cllr Wendy Lewis, was appointed to the role at the Council’s recent Annual General Meeting. Cllr Lewis has chosen four charities for her year in office, and is looking forward to raising awareness and funding for them.

Cllr Lewis, Elected Member for Llwynypia Ward, said she is delighted to take on the role previously held by Cllr Wendy Treeby, of Mountain Ash, and is looking forward to her time as Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, a place she has lived all her life.

Born and raised in the Rhondda Valley, Cllr Lewis says she will continue to champion the County Borough at every opportunity.

Cllr Lewis, a quality project manager as well as an elected Labour member of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, tragically lost her husband 15 years ago due to a sudden illness. She has three children and two grandchildren, who she says she is very proud of all they have achieved.

As a child, Cllr Lewis attended Alaw Primary School and Porth County Comprehensive School. She has always had a great interest in politics and was elected as a Councillor representing the Llwynypia Ward in 2017.

Currently vice-chair of the Council’s Planning and Development Committee, Cllr Lewis has been a Cub Leader for 25 years and is also a member of the Fairtrade Foundation and the Rhondda-based Dig For Health Group.

Councillor Wendy Lewis, Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, speaking following her appointment, said: “It is a huge honour for me to serve as Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf for the ensuing year. I am so proud to be able to represent my beloved County Borough in this way.

“I look forward to meeting as many people, groups and organisations as possible and hope to raise much-needed funds and raise awareness to my chosen charities, all of which mean so much to me.”

Cllr Lewis says her chosen charities for her year in office are all very special to her and are close to her heart. They are Brain Tumour Research, The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society (SANDS) and Hope Rescue. She will also be supporting the Armed Forces and the National Eisteddfod of Wales, which comes to Rhondda Cynon Taf in 2024.

Also appointed at the Council AGM meeting on Wednesday, May 10, was Rhondda Cynon Taf Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dan Owen-Jones, Elected Member for Tonyrefail East Ward. Councillor Owen-Jones is Chair of the governing body at Williamstown Primary School, Chair of Capel Community Resources Centre and Vice Chair on Tonyrefail Skatepark.
