New films help The Red Dragon Centre return to pre-pandemic footfall

The Red Dragon Centre has seen its busiest fortnight since 2019 thanks to the double release of blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer on 21 July.

At ODEON Cardiff, the home of Wales’ only IMAX screen, film-lovers flocked to see the double-bill and are yet to stop, with over 14,000 viewers on the opening weekend alone making it second only to the release of Avengers: Endgame four years ago.

As Barbie hits the billion mark three weeks after its release, it continues to be the dominant film in ODEON Cardiff with sold out screenings every day, while every IMAX showing of Oppenheimer since its release has sold over 60% occupancy in advance.

Rhys Davies, Cinema Manager at ODEON Cardiff, said: “It’s crazy to see how many people have gathered at the cinema over the last three weeks to see either Barbie or Oppenheimer, or both. The opening weekend was the busiest we have seen for quite some years, and footfall in the Centre has been consistently up since the release. We sold over 485 hot dogs in the first week of Barbenheimer – that’s 381 feet of hot dog sold!”

Emma Constantinou, Marketing Manager at The Red Dragon Centre, said: “It’s been great to see an extra buzz around the Centre over the last few weeks, with people dressed in their finest pink outfits for Barbie and film fanatics filling the IMAX to see Oppenheimer. The summer holidays have certainly kickstarted with a bang with July being our busiest month yet, and we look forward to this continuing throughout August.”

The Red Dragon Centre, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022, is Cardiff Bay’s leading entertainment venue and houses a multitude of interactive, lifestyle and food and drink venues including Odeon Cinema, the Hollywood Bowl, Grosvenor Casino, Simply Gym, Five Guys, Spice Route, Volcano, Roots and Zaika.
