Budding young Welsh inventors will be showcasing their creations at exhibitions in Cardiff and Bangor this October.

A celebration of Welsh design and technology, the exhibitions are part of exam board WJEC’s Innovations Awards, in conjunction with Welsh Government. The most promising inventors and creations will go on to be shortlisted for the Innovations Awards at a ceremony later this year.

The exhibitions will take place at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on October 9th and 10th, and Reichel Hall, Bangor University, on October 16th, and will showcase the most innovative work at GCSE, AS and A Level in Design and Technology.  The exhibitions will give visiting students and teachers from schools across Wales a chance to see some of the best work of students aged 16 to 18.

A programme of seminars will also be available throughout, exploring topics such as ‘identifying opportunities for innovative design’ and ‘testing and evaluating for effective innovation’.

Last year’s Innovations Awards, the first since a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, saw students commended for their perseverance in overcoming many challenges to produce such high-quality work, at a ceremony at the Pierhead in Cardiff Bay.

WJEC Chief Executive Ian Morgan said: “I’m continually amazed at the ingenuity and quality of what our Design and Technology students are creating. The exhibitions provide us with a brilliant opportunity to showcase some of this incredible talent, and for visiting students from schools and colleges across Wales to be inspired by the creations on show.

“The very best inventions will go on to be celebrated at our Innovations Awards later this year, a task I think the judges are going to find very difficult indeed.”
