Pupils from Ysgol Cynwyd Sant won two regional categories in a recent digital competition set by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), and later represented the Central South Consortium at the final, held at the Principality Stadium.

Learners were set the task of designing and building a rugby club for the future using Minecraft for Education, and pupils from Ysgol Cynwyd Sant undoubtedly rose to the challenge.

This particular competition is always popular amongst our pupils and all classes from Years 3 to 6 were busy collaborating, designing, and competing for the win. We held an internal competition and groups were selected from there.

We could not have been prouder that a group from Year 6 and pupils from our new moderate learning needs classroom at school, had been selected for the regional finals in the Principality Stadium. We were treated like VIPs with stadiums tours and meeting international players. Standards were exceptionally high, and we are immensely proud of our pupils and their designs.

    Headteacher, Sarah Gwen Richards

There has always been a buzz around the school when we’ve run the competition and it’s wonderful to see such passion and pride over what they have created.

It’s a task that develops skills from across the curriculum and we’ve seen a real improvement year on year from competing.

Digital Competence Framework Lead at the school, Thomas Roberts

This is amazing – to engage learners from across the school in a project which not only develops independent learning, but also collaborative skills and creativity, amongst other attributes, is nothing short of brilliant. Well done to the pupils, teachers and to the WRU for setting the challenge! Absolutely fantastic!

Councillor Jon-Paul Blundell, Cabinet Member for Education,
