Summer ends on a high note for 10-year-old Joti Sandhu of Brecon, who successfully auditioned for the renowned Brecon Cathedral Choir.

A Year Six pupil at Christ College, Brecon, Joti has been part of her school’s choir for the last three years. Now a chorister at Brecon Cathedral, she joins the long line of musicians who have helped make worshiping at the cathedral such a joyous experience for over 900 years.

Talking about her experience, Joti said:

“I’m really excited about this new adventure. It’s great to be meeting new singers and to be part of the Cathedral’s community. I’ve only recently started but everyone has been so friendly and welcoming. I’m already learning lots about music theory, which also helps with my drama and music lessons in school.”

Jonathan Ling, Director of Music at Christ College said:

“We are delighted that Joti has been accepted into the Cathedral Choir as a Probationer. This is an outstanding achievement as well as a considerable commitment; the musical preparation choristers receive in cathedral choirs is excellent.

“Christ College has a long line of pupils who have achieved this in the past and we are always pleased to work in partnership with the cathedral.”

Julie Lewis, Head of St. Nicholas House said: “Becoming a probationer chorister at Brecon Cathedral is a fantastic achievement for Joti. I know this was something that she really wanted, and she showed great determination and perseverance in earning her place in the choir. We are very proud of course and wholeheartedly support Joti with her ongoing commitments at the cathedral.”

Aged between eight and 13, all the children who are part of the Brecon Cathedral Choir attend local schools. They come to the cathedral to rehearse several times a week during term time and sing an early evening service on Fridays, in addition to two choral services on Sundays.

As well as singing for cathedral services and concerts, the choir undertakes recordings, broadcasts and tours. Tours over the last ten years have included visits to sing at Ripon Cathedral, York Minster, Blaubeuren in Germany, Glasgow, Edinburgh, the French Loire Valley and the Italian region of Tuscany.
