The University of South Wales (USW) has appointed Kier Group as the constructors of a new Chiropractic Clinic, set to be built on Treforest Campus by spring 2025.
The Clinic, which will be the new home of the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (WIOC), will be an extension of the learning and teaching facilities for Chiropractic at the base of the campus.
The project will replace the current facilities at the William Price Business Park, bringing together all learning, teaching and treatments onto the same site for the first time since the Master of Chiropractic (MChiro) degree course started in 1997.
Kier Group started construction works this month, and have begun groundworks ready to assemble the building’s steel frame. The Clinic building is expected to be completed in spring 2025, and will welcome new patients from summer 2025.
Designed by a team of architects from Cardiff-based Stride Treglown, the 900 sqm, two-storey building will include treatment rooms, DXA (bone density) and ultrasound scan rooms, a seminar room and support spaces for students and colleagues, among many more facilities.
It will be constructed with sustainability at the heart of the design to ensure that the building is as resilient and energy efficient as possible, supporting USW’s goal to becoming carbon neutral by 2040.
Nick Fletcher, Head of Projects and Space Management at USW, is overseeing the project. He said: “By moving the Chiropractic facilities out of William Price Business Park, it will allow Chiropractic learning and the WIOC clinic to be based in one building, rather than spread over four. This also makes a positive contribution to consolidating our activity in Pontypridd, and ensuring enhanced vibrancy and student experience.”
Jason Taylor, Regional Director at Kier Construction Western & Wales, said: “We are thrilled to be building this new Chiropractic Clinic, and to be continuing our relationship with USW, having previously delivered the Sport Park in Pontypridd.
“When completed, the new clinic will be an important building both for residents and the university, adding to local healthcare facilities and helping the next generation of professionals train at USW.”
Professor David Byfield, Head of Clinical Services, added: “We are very excited to see construction work start on the new clinic, which will complement our excellent new learning and teaching space that we have been using since 2022.
“The space will provide a contemporary, purposefully designed, bespoke teaching and clinic estates infrastructure to meet the demands of the course and clinical out-patient requirements, future-proofed for the next 25 years. This has created vibrant social and learning spaces that enhance the student experience in and outside of mainstream teaching.”
