British Gas has been awarded a new seven-year contract to deliver services via the new Welsh Government’s Warm Homes scheme. The scheme has been administered by British Gas since 2011 and it has helped 60,300 low-income households with a package of free home energy efficiency measures. It has also provided 210, 800 households with free, impartial advice and signposting to a range of support services.

The new contract is worth approximately £200m over a 7-year period and will support both British Gas’ and the Welsh Government’s work to tackle fuel poverty. The scheme will see improvements in the energy efficiency of the existing housing stock in Wales, lower carbon emissions, and deliver jobs and growth in the energy efficiency sector.

The new scheme will focus on low carbon technologies for the home to support Welsh Government’s ambition to make Wales net zero by 2050. Under the new scheme, the best energy efficient solution will be delivered through insulation, low carbon heating and renewable energy technologies.

The scheme will deliver energy efficiency improvements in up to 2000 properties per annum. British Gas will use its Welsh based supply chain to deliver the scheme with a mix of Wales based contractors and its own employees working on the scheme. The contract begins on 1 April 2024 and will run for a period of up to seven years.

Chris O’Shea, Group Chief Executive of Centrica, owner of British Gas, said: “The work we’ve done with the Welsh Government over the past thirteen years is one of the things I’m most proud of. Over this period, we’ve supported over 60,000 households. That’s thousands of people who have had support they might not have received without this collaboration between the Welsh Government and British Gas.

“I’m so pleased we have the privilege of continuing this work in Wales, and I’m excited to dial up our efforts to improve the energy efficiency of properties across the country. Our dedicated team based in Ebbw Vale and field teams across Wales have successfully delivered energy efficiency measures to thousands of homes and we look forward to doing this for another seven years.”
