Two new charging points for electric vehicles are now available for public use.
Newport City Council agreed to install the pods in Park Square car park in the city centre.
The move follows the decision by the council to reduce carbon emmissions across the city and create a healthier and greener environment by introducing two electric vehicles to its fleet.
The 30kWh Nissan Leafs will be used by the council’s Private Sector Housing Team to undertake home visits to support people with adaptations which deliver improved mobility and accessibility in their own homes.
The first electric vehicle charge point was installed for the Nissan Leafs outside the Civic Centre in early March.
The two charging pods for public use were installed this week.
Drivers of electric vehicles can use the pod-point open charge network available to download as an app on a smart phone.
Councillor Roger Jeavons, the council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene welcomed the installation of the two new charging points.
“The council is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations and see the addition of the two electric vehicles to our fleet, plus installing the three charging points in the city, as one of a variety of ways we can achieve this aim,” said Councillor Jeavons.
