Plans to make Swansea’s historic Oystermouth Castle even more welcoming to visitors have taken an important step forward.

Funding has been secured to undertake a feasibility study into a range of innovations at the attraction.

It could lead to the creation of a new reception area, shop, education facilities, exhibition area and visitor toilet.

The £148,020 grant was obtained by volunteer group The Friends of Oystermouth Castle through Swansea Council’s share of the Shared Prosperity Fund, part of the UK Government’s Levelling Up agenda.

Friends chair Paul Lewis said: “This grant will allow our members to realise our ambitions for the castle and will ensure it fulfils its potential as an iconic visitor attraction in Mumbles.

“We want to improve the visitor experience and to provide a better learning environment for local education.”

Council cabinet member Elliott King said: “We look forward to seeing how the feasibility study helps to point the way forward for the group’s exciting plans.”

Meanwhile, the castle – with panoramic views across Swansea Bay – is now open for its spring and summer season.

It’s open to the public from 11am-5pm every day except Tuesdays to September 30 – and every weekend in October.

The 2024 season will offer family-friendly events throughout the year right up until Christmas.
