Visitors to Pontypridd will soon notice work activity to improve the condition and appearance of a block of Council-owned buildings at Taff Street. The scheme will likely cause minimal disruption, with all premises remaining open.
RCT Council will undertake a range of improvements to 103-110 Taff Street from Tuesday, May 7. The block is owned by the Local Authority and has been identified as needing refurbishment for its continued use by businesses.
The scheme will improve the buildings’ appearance and functionality – with the work including roof and canopy repairs, the renewal of cladding, rendering enhancements, and shop front improvements to certain properties. The work that starts on Tuesday will be the first phase of the overall refurbishment, with a renewal of the flat roof covering scheduled to take place later this year.
Albion Workplace Solutions is appointed by the Council as the contractor to deliver the first phase of work, which will be completed by summer 2024.
The contractor will make every effort to minimise disruption to businesses and the town centre. Scaffolding is needed to deliver the work, but the shops within the block will remain open at all times and access will be maintained.
Councillor Mark Norris, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Development and Prosperity, said: “The upcoming refurbishment of 103-110 Taff Street will improve the external appearance of the premises and the wider block, while improving the units’ functionality to ensure they continue to be suitable for businesses to operate from. These buildings are owned by the Council, and we have secured external funding to deliver the improvements.
“This is the latest scheme in the continued regeneration of Pontypridd Town Centre, with our Placemaking Plan setting an exciting vision for the future – to build upon what we’ve already achieved. Major projects such as Llys Cadwyn, Cwrt yr Orsaf and YMa are delivered, while landmark schemes at the former bingo hall and M&S sites are progressing, along with the Muni redevelopment and the Heritage Lottery Fund works at Ynysangharad War Memorial Park.
