The draft plan sets out how the council will work to mitigate the risks to residents and communities from localised flooding over the next six years.
It sets out how we will manage flooding in the city, how we assess flood risk, and what preventative measures can be taken to manage this risk.
It also sets out potential sources of flooding and who is responsible for managing them. These include things like flooding from ordinary watercourses, surface water, ground water, coastal flooding and sewer flooding.
The consultation on the strategy, launched today, asks residents for their views on flooding in Newport, how prepared they feel in the event of a flooding incident, and what they think the council can do to help people prepare more effectively for an incident.
Feedback from the consultation will be used to refine the strategy, before it is finalised later in the year and sent to Welsh government.
Commenting on the strategy, Councillor Laura Lacey, cabinet member for infrastructure and assets, said: “Our draft strategy sets out a comprehensive plan for how we will help to mitigate the risks of flooding across the city.
“Before we finalise the strategy, we really want to hear residents’ views on the proposed actions, but also more generally about their concerns around the risk of flooding.
“All feedback we receive will go into shaping the final version of the strategy, so I would encourage anyone with an interest in this to have their say!”
