New modern care accommodation in Ferndale moves to next phase

Alongside an appointed design partner, the Council is continuing to develop its plans for a new residential care accommodation that was previously agreed for Ferndale – with initial ground testing currently taking place.

In February 2023, Cabinet agreed a major investment in state-of-the-art care accommodation that would transform the availability of local care provision, to support older and other vulnerable people and meet their changing needs and requirements. At that time, Members agreed a multi-million-pound investment to build modern facilities in Porth, Treorchy, Mountain Ash, Church Village and Ferndale.

Suitable land has been identified for this new facility at the former Chubb factory site, adjacent to the new school being built for Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llyn y Forwyn. To progress this new development, the Council has commissioned Quattro Design Architects to create the design and oversee the ground testing in preparation for the main construction scheme, subject to planning permission being granted in the future.

The Council is pleased to confirm that ground testing has now commenced on site, as a first step in of progressing the development of this much-needed facility. In September, the Council’s Cabinet will receive a report in respect of residential care and the feedback received from residents and stakeholders upon the recently published draft Adult Care Strategy.

Councillor Gareth Caple, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “The need to modernise and continually-improve adult social care services for communities in Rhondda Cynon Taf is a key priority. Cabinet last year agreed a multi-million pound investment to build modern accommodation in Treorchy, Ferndale, Mountain Ash and Church Village – reflecting the change in people’s needs from ‘traditional’ care homes to more independent and complex care accommodation, to best serve communities for generations to come.

“It is great to see this initial phase of work in Ferndale, providing a tangible demonstration that progress is happening to deliver a new modern care accommodation that meets the future needs of residents. I’m pleased that a design partner has now been appointed by the Council and the initial ground testing at the former Chubb factory site are now underway.”
