Small and medium sized businesses in Swansea can soon find out how they might benefit from contracts worth close to £5m over the next six months in Swansea and beyond.

They’re being invited to attend an event being organised by Business Wales and supported by Swansea Council’s Commercial, Corporate Building and Economic Regeneration departments on Tuesday September 10.

Many other public sector organisations from across South Wales will also be attending. Taking place at Swansea Arena from 9am to 4pm, businesses which attend will learn how to do business with the council and how best to bid for council work opportunities.

Cllr David Hopkins, Swansea Council’s Joint Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Performance, said: “From construction and technology to social care and transport, the council has over £4.97m worth of contracts that businesses can bid for in the near future.

“We’re committed to ensuring as much of this work as possible goes to local businesses though because this helps protect local employment while also potentially creating new jobs for local people too.

“The small and medium sized businesses that attend the event at the arena will find it helpful because our council team and other public sector organisations will be there to meet them face-to-face to offer any advice or support they can.”

Grants of up to £1,000 are also now available to help local Swansea businesses bid for public sector or larger-scale contracts.

Successful business applicants will be able to use the funding to help access training for the accreditation that’s needed to bid for work of this kind.

Run by Swansea Council and funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the supplier development grant requires applicants to provide 50% of the costs in match-funding. All applicants also have to provide a business summary and a 12-month cashflow forecast.
