Glenboi Community Primary School opens state-of-the-art childcare and play facilities

A brand new building and external spaces have been opened at Glenboi Community Primary School at the start of the new academic year – to greatly improve its childcare setting and enhance the outdoor play facilities for pupils.

The exciting project in Mountain Ash has been made possible thanks to significant funding support being secured from Welsh Government, via its Childcare and Early Years Capital Programme. The project has demolished an older building and replaced it with a new-build that contains excellent facilities – a modern and vibrant play space, an office, a staff kitchen, a food preparation area, and a dedicated outdoor play area with a canopy.

The project will increase the capacity of Care Inspectorate Wales registered childcare places offered on site. The setting caters predominantly for children accessing the Flying Start programme, but it will now also be able to provide Childcare Offer funded places – as well as after school and holiday care.

The new building has been constructed a short distance from the old one, which has enabled the space vacated by the old building to be developed for the school’s use. This area has also been renovated and now includes a Multi Use Games Area that will enhance the outdoor play opportunities for pupils.

Councillor Rhys Lewis, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and the Welsh Language, said: “These fantastic facilities at Glenboi Community Primary School are the result of a significant investment completed in time for the new school year. We continue to welcome Welsh Government funding support to improve education facilities right across the County Borough, delivering 21st Century projects in more of our communities.

“The project in Glenboi has two main elements. The first is a new building that offers much-improved childcare facilities compared to the former facility, which needed replacement. The second element is a renovated primary school space that contains a Multi Use Games Area. The investment has significantly improved the childcare setting that operates from the school – while both elements of the project have also increased the external space available on site, promoting outdoor learning and play opportunities all-year around.

“The Council has delivered this project alongside a separate scheme at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Castellau this September. The work in Beddau has seen two classrooms renovated for the Nursery and Reception age groups, in the first step towards operating a Welsh Medium childcare facility from the school later this term. These projects show our continued commitment to securing and delivering investment in childcare facilities for our communities – targeted to increase families’ access to Flying Start provisions and the Childcare Offer.”
