An amber weather warning for snow in Northern England has been extended until January 6, 2025 (Monday) morning. This warning comes after a great amount of snow has already fallen, causing problems for travel in the area. The Met Office has said that areas such as Lancashire, Cumbria, and the Lake District will continue to experience snow until 6 a.m. Monday.

They also warned that higher areas could receive up to 15 cm more snow. This could cause even more travel delays and power outages and make it difficult for some rural areas to stay connected.

Other weather warnings issued across the UK

On January 5 (Sunday), the Met Office issued several weather warnings for different parts of the UK. These included seven yellow warnings for snow and ice in regions like Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and the Midlands.

There were also warnings for rain in southern England. If you’re looking for a pastime while it’s freezing outside, platforms like Sportsbet io are a great option to place bets on your favourite sports.

While much of the country experienced a change from snow to rain, Northern England saw much heavier snowfall. For instance, Bingley in West Yorkshire had 17 cm of snow by 11 a.m. on Sunday. Other areas like Shap in Cumbria and Capel Curig in Wales reported around 10 cm of snow.

Air travel disruptions due to snow

The heavy snow caused problems for air travel in northern England. Runways at Leeds Bradford, Manchester, and Liverpool John Lennon airports had to be closed because of the snow. Although the runways at Manchester and Liverpool reopened later in the morning, there were still delays.

Leeds Bradford reopened its runway around 2:15 p.m. but warned that flight delays would continue due to a backlog. Other airports, like Birmingham and Bristol, also had to close temporarily to clear snow. These airports resumed operations, but delays were still expected.

    Road and rail troubles

The snow and flooding caused problems on the roads as well. National Highways reported several road closures across the country. They also warned people to expect more travel disruptions, especially in northern areas. They advised people not to travel on certain routes.

In Cumbria, police reported multiple car accidents, including a crash involving several cars on the A595 at Bothel. Another single-car crash happened on Kirkstone Pass in the Lake District.

Flood warnings and power cuts in some areas

The Environment Agency issued 22 flood warnings, especially in the western parts of southern England. The snow and rain created the risk of flooding in these areas. The National Grid also reported power outages in some places.

Despite these issues, both Liverpool and Manchester United confirmed that their football match would go ahead as planned, even though there were concerns that it might be postponed.

Health alerts and support for homeless people

The UK Health Security Agency has issued cold weather health alerts for all of England. The warnings predict that the cold temperatures will increase health risks for the elderly and those with health problems. The amber alerts issued last January 2 (Thursday) are expected to stay in effect until Wednesday.

In response to the cold weather, councils in London and Southern England have set up emergency measures to help rough sleepers. These measures include providing extra shelters to keep homeless people safe from the cold.

    Forecast for the coming days

The Met Office has predicted that sleet and snow will continue to move from the south to the north and east on Sunday. The heaviest snow is expected in northern England and southern Scotland. On Monday, snow showers will reach Northern Scotland, while southern areas are expected to have milder weather.

However, there will still be frost and icy patches on the roads. Monday and Tuesday are expected to be drier, with some sunshine, but it will still be colder than usual for this time of year. More snow is possible later

Mike Silverstone, the deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, said that there could be more snow in southern and central England and Wales later this week. A weather system might bring more snow as it meets cold air in the region.

However, the forecast is still uncertain, and the snow could be lighter than expected. As the winter weather continues, residents are urged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and take precautions to stay safe.
