Newport City Council’s leader and cabinet member for regeneration have welcomed ambitious proposals by docks’ operator ABP.

Last year, the company unveiled its masterplan which set out how it would build on its classic port role while blending in innovations to become a highly efficient, zero-carbon port with a “clean growth hub” by 2040.

Councillor Dimitri Batrouni and Councillor James Clarke met with ABP representatives during a recent visit to the port.

Councillor Batrouni said: “Newport Docks have been pivotal to the development of the city over the last two centuries and we were impressed with the company’s plans to make sure the port meets the demands of the 21st century and has a sustainable future.

“These are exciting developments that will bring both economic and environmental benefits to Newport Docks and the city and I look forward to watching them progress over the next 15 years.”

Councillor Clarke added: “We are pleased to be working in partnership with ABP in 2025 and beyond and we support their exciting proposals for the port which is still a busy and important part of the city’s economy.”

Around 700 acres, the docks handles around £1 billion of UK trade and over two million tonnes of cargo each year. It is the largest steel handling port in the UK and supports more than 4,000 jobs nationally.

Commenting on the visit, Ashley Curnow, ABP’s divisional port manager for Wales and the South West, said: “We were delighted to welcome Councillor Batrouni and Councillor Clarke to the Port of Newport. It’s an exciting time for us as we shared our ambitious plans for the port’s future.

“The Port of Newport has never been busier, playing a vital role in boosting the local economy and creating jobs. We look forward to working in partnership with the Council to turn our masterplan into reality.”
