Overnight road closure on the A4119 as part of dualling scheme

A full night-time road closure is needed on the A4119 between Coed Ely and Ynysmaerdy on Monday, February 17 – which is being held at night to significantly minimise disruption (9pm to 6am).

The dualling scheme is a major transportation project to improve connectivity and encourage economic activity – providing a dual carriageway on the A4119 gateway to the Rhondda, from Coed Ely to Ynysmaerdy. A new active travel bridge was also installed just south of Coed Ely roundabout, to enable walkers and cyclists to cross the road from a new community route into the village.

The main work is nearing completion, with the Council’s contractor currently undertaking finishing activities across the work site that are safety-critical. This is part of the process of preparing for handover to the Council, which will be achieved once all finishing works are completed to a satisfactory standard.

As part of the outstanding safety-critical works, the contractor is required to rectify some sub-standard sections of the surfacing that was laid before Christmas, following inspection as part of the handover. The works require a necessary road closure.

The upcoming night-time work (from 9pm on Monday, February 17) will have the same arrangements as the previous overnight closures in December 2024. The work will end by 6am on Tuesday, February 18.

The A4119 will close in both directions between Coed Ely Roundabout and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service Roundabout at Ynysmaerdy. A map of the closure area and alternative routes is included here. This will be a significant diversion for motorists – via the Church Village Bypass, A470 to Pontypridd, A4058 to Tonypandy/Clydach Vale, and A4119 to Coed Ely. No access will be permitted along Smaelog Lane nor Ely Valley Road.

During the closure period, a shuttle bus operated by Stagecoach will link passengers between Coed Ely and Tonypandy, for onward and return travel to Cardiff via Service 122. The shuttle bus timetable is included here.

The work is subject to fair weather – any change in the arrangements will be communicated by the Council via its social media channels.

Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd has provided contact details for its Public Liaison Officer, for residents to ask any questions relating to the work. They can be contacted on 03300 412185 (8.30am-5.30pm, Mondays to Fridays), or the site team can be emailed on [email protected].
