Early next month, Councillor Dimitri Batrouni, leader of Newport City Council will be joining thousands of runners as they take on the St Joseph’s Hospital City of Newport Half Marathon.

Taking place on Sunday 2 March, the half marathon route winds its way through the streets of Newport and Caerleon and aims to be a celebration of both community spirit and athleticism with runners of all levels taking part.

Councillor Batrouni commented: “The St Joseph’s Hospital City of Newport Half Marathon is an amazing Newport event in support of an invaluable local service. I’m very excited to be taking part this year and running alongside, or maybe slightly behind, my colleague and long-term supporter of the event John Griffiths MS.”

The half marathon is organised by St David’s Hospice Care and sponsored by St Joseph’s Hospital who share a dedication to promoting health and supporting the local community.

“St David’s Hospice Care provide essential support to people from Newport and further afield, something I have come to appreciate even more so through the recent personal experience of a close friend.

“Any sponsorship I can raise and support I can give that will help deliver those services will be 13.1 miles well spent!

“There are some great spots to watch from too, especially along the riverside, so please come out and show your support for all the runners on the day.”

Emma Saysell, Chief Executive of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “We are delighted to once again be organising this prestigious event for us here at the hospice. We started this event back in 2013 and it’s an event we are extremely proud to run which has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to help us provide our free care to patients and their families. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved, including our sponsors, runners, suppliers and volunteers whilst not forgetting the wonderful people of Newport. It’s a special event that all concerned should be very proud of.”
