While these venues deliver world-class racing and vibrant crowds, managing large attendances remains a challenge.
Official data submitted by British racecourses to the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) recorded a total of 4,799,730 attendees across race meetings in 2024. Though this was a slight drop from 2023, the average attendance per meeting rose from 3,392 to 3,404 – meaning facilities must accommodate thousands at any given time.

A Tripadvisor user criticised the overcrowding at Newmarket, stating: “Far too many people crammed in this time, normally a great day out but really disappointed. The Premier enclosure was rammed full of people, bar queues were terrible and the toilets too.”
Meanwhile, a Google reviewer echoed similar frustrations, commenting: “Crazy queues for EVERYTHING, really poorly trained bar staff serving everything in plastic and getting home is an absolute nightmare…”

A staple of the flat racing calendar, York Racecourse is beloved for its stunning setting and top-class racing. However, the numbers reveal a noticeable percentage of racegoers mentioning queues as a downside to the experience.
