The Gower’s hidden gem? We stayed at Oxwich Bay Hotel to find out

If you’re anything like us, you love the idea of a weekend escape that doesn’t involve airports, passports, or hours stuck in traffic. So when we were invited by the lovely team at Oxwich Bay Hotel to try out their new stays, we jumped at the chance. Tucked away on the stunning Gower Peninsula, just a short drive from Cardiff, and it genuinely felt like we’d struck gold.

We stayed in one of the family caravans at Beach Walk Parc, which turned out to be the perfect base for our little break. And when we say it’s close to the beach, we mean right there. You’re literally steps from the golden sands of Oxwich Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK. We could just about hear the waves from our door and were on the sand within minutes. No car packing. No fuss. Just grab your bucket and spade and go.

The caravan had everything we needed: comfy beds (with plenty of space for a cot in the double bedroom), a cosy living space, a well-equipped kitchenette (ideal for quick breakfasts or late-night snacks), a proper power shower, and central heating—so it’s perfect year-round. Ours slept up to eight and was serviced daily, meaning we could focus on relaxing, not tidying.

    The Magic of Oxwich

Oxwich Bay Hotel offers accommodation with the beach on its doorstep, honestly, you don’t get any closer. The views are absolutely stunning, with clear waters and a dramatic coastline stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s no wonder this spot is so popular with families, dog walkers, and water sports enthusiasts.

Despite being under an hour from Cardiff, it feels like you’ve travelled much further. The fresh sea air, the peaceful pace, and the unspoilt scenery make it easy to switch off and unwind. It’s exactly what we needed to reconnect as a family.

    Local Adventures & Goonies Vibes

There’s so much to explore nearby. We wandered through the Oxwich National Nature Reserve, spotted wildlife, paddled in the sea, and the kids had a blast looking for jelly fish and racing along the beach

Just ten minutes down the road, you’ll find the Gower Heritage Centre and another firm favourite of ours,

Three Cliffs Bay. The walk there has a real sense of adventure and, in a funny way, gave us proper Goonies vibes. It’s dramatic, wild, and well worth the trek.

    Food, Glorious Food

When it came to eating, we made the most of the sunshine and headed to the hotel’s Cafe Garden Bar, which overlooks the beach. There’s plenty of outdoor seating, though it does get busy (and it’s easy to see why). We grabbed a drink, perched on the wall, and waited for a table to become free. Menus are available online, including a children’s menu.

We kept things simple with burgers and homemade chips, and honestly, with the sun shining and that view in front of us, it was the perfect lunch.

The hotel also offers High Tea by the Sea, complete with dainty finger sandwiches, warm scones, and the fluffiest Welsh cakes, plus that same gorgeous view. And if you’re around on a Sunday, don’t miss the Sunday roast—full trimmings included.

Breakfast each morning hit the spot too, with a buffet of sausages, bacon, eggs, pastries, and plenty of hot coffee. Vegan and gluten-free options are available, which we really appreciated.

    A Dreamy Wedding Venue

While we didn’t get married here (already done and dusted!), we totally get why so many couples choose it. The hotel doubles as a wedding venue, and we were lucky enough to catch a ceremony during our stay. Imagine saying your vows with the sea as your backdrop—utterly dreamy.

    Family-Friendly, Fuss-Free Fun

What we loved most about Beach Walk Parc was how simple yet special it felt. No frills, no fuss, just quality family time, beautiful surroundings, and that rare feeling of being truly relaxed.

Our daughter and niece especially enjoyed the outdoor space. With only a small number of caravans, it felt safe and secure enough to let them play outside and chill on their own. You can park right next to your accommodation, with room for at least one car, and the main hotel has ample parking if needed.

Caravans might be cosy, but with hotel facilities on your doorstep, like breakfast and dinner, and a self-catering setup for snacks and lunches, you get the best of both worlds.

    The Perfect Staycation Base

Oxwich Bay makes an ideal base for exploring the Gower. Whether you’re into beach days, scenic walks, wildlife spotting or simply relaxing with a view, you’re in the heart of it all here. And if Beach Walk Parc isn’t your thing, don’t worry, there’s plenty of other accommodation on offer too.

Fancy a beachy breather without the airport queues? We found ours at Oxwich—maybe it’s your turn next.

Huge thanks again to Oxwich Bay Hotel for having us, we’re already planning our return!
