An improved neighbourhood skate park is now open for use at Parc Melin Mynach in Gorseinon.

Ramps, banks and a quarter pipe form part of the upgraded facility, which is part of a £2.8m Swansea Council investment in wheel sports across the city.

The completion follows-on from the introduction of an improved neighbourhood skate park at Coed Bach Park in Pontarddulais a few months ago.

Landscaping has taken place too and grassed spaces will develop in the coming months.

Many other wheel sports sites throughout Swansea will also benefit from improvements.

Working closely alongside experts at Curve Studio, the plans mean most people won’t have to travel more than two miles to reach a redeveloped skateboarding or wheel sports facility once the investment is complete.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “It’s wonderful to see the improved neighbourhood skate parks at both Melin Mynach and Coed Bach now in use as we continue to deliver the kind of wheel sports facilities in Swansea that enthusiasts deserve.

“More improvements of this kind will follow in the coming months and year as part of our commitment to make Swansea one of the UK’s best cities for skateboarding, BMXing and other wheel sports.

“This follows-on from a council investment of £8m in improved playgrounds across Swansea in a boost to many thousands of children and families.”

Other sites already announced for skate park improvements include a skate plaza at Victoria Park, as well as neighbourhood skate parks at Mynydd Newydd in Penlan and the Phoenix Centre in Townhill.  There are also plans for a new pump track for novice and junior BMXers at Melin Mynach and the existing pump track at Clyne Valley will be undergoing a refurbishment.

Details on when improvement works will start at those sites – as well as information on other sites to benefit – will be announced in due course.

The overall investment includes funding from ward members, the community investment fund, community and town councils, and the Welsh Government through an active travel grant.
