Pontypridd residents urged to plan ahead for Berw Road Bridge closures

Residents are advised that Berw Road Bridge (White Bridge) in Pontypridd will temporarily close from August 18-22, and then August 26-29 following the Bank Holiday weekend. This will enable the contractor of the recent major restoration scheme to undertake corrective works, followed by a routine inspection of the structure.

The Listed structure was damaged in Storm Dennis, and the Council worked closely with Cadw on the development and delivery of a complex restoration scheme that was substantially completed in July 2024. It included several hundred individual concrete and structural steelwork repairs, bridge deck waterproofing, and replacing the highway drainage system and surfacing.

The Council has now announced that two temporary closures of the bridge, to vehicles and pedestrians, are required to undertake important site activities.

The first closure will take place from Monday, August 18, to Friday, August 22, enabling the Council’s contractor for the restoration scheme to undertake corrective work to the kerbing and the surfacing on the Berw Road side of the bridge. A lane closure on Berw Road is also required and temporary traffic lights will be installed for this period (August 18-22). These works will be at no further cost to the Council.

The second closure will then follow on after the bank holiday weekend, taking place between Tuesday, August 26, and Friday, August 29. This will enable a full, routine inspection of the bridge to take place, as part of its maintenance.

Please note, the dates given for both closures are subject to change.

During both closures of White Bridge, an alternative route for motorists from the southern side of the closure is via The Parade, West Street, Bridge Street Roundabout, Bridge Street, and Berw Road. In the opposite direction, proceed via Berw Road, Bridge Street, West Street, Middle Street, Bonvilston Road and The Parade.
