Major upgrades planned for Aberdare’s Duke Street Car Park

RCT Council is giving advanced notice of an upcoming improvement scheme at Duke Street Car Park within Aberdare Town Centre, which will include resurfacing the entire facility. This will require the capacity of the car park to be temporarily reduced from September 8, to enable the work.

From Monday, September 8, the scheme will begin to improve and enhance the well-used town centre car park at Duke Street – located next to Aberdare Bus Station. Site activity will include drainage work and pedestrian access improvements, along with the main resurfacing element. This will involve the current blockwork being removed and a new tarmac surface being laid.

This scheme is essential to replace the existing paving blocks, which were installed almost 30 years ago – with many now becoming loose and sinking. This is why the Council has brought the improvements forward for delivery.

While the facility is able to remain open throughout the three-month investment scheme, there will be an unavoidable reduction in the car park’s capacity on a temporary basis, due to the nature of the work.

Alternative long-stay parking is available in and around Aberdare Town Centre, in Council-owned car parks at Crown Buildings, Nant Row, Rock Grounds and the Ynys. Gadlys Pit Car Park is also a long-stay car park available to relevant permit holders. Short stay parking (up to four hours) is located at Aberdare Library, Green Street and High Street car parks.

Alternative waiting arrangements have also been made in place of the taxi lane located within Duke Street Car Park, for the duration of the scheme.

Please note, a full closure of the car park will be required at the end of the scheme, to deliver final resurfacing and white-lining work.
