Work on creating a new street plaza-style facility for skateboarding and other wheeled sports at Swansea’s Victoria Park is anticipated to start in the coming month.

Swansea Council will soon be appointing a contractor for the work, which is expected to be finished by the end of March next year.

A meeting is taking place at the park at 4.30pm on Tuesday November 11 where experts from Curve Studio will be on hand to talk people through the project, which will take place in the area where the skate ramp is currently located.

A follow-up meeting will then be held at Guildhall, where an update will be given on other sites due to benefit from a £2.8m council investment in wheeled sports across the city.

Updated designs for a BMX-focused facility at Gowerton’s Elba sports complex and an improved skatepark at Ynystawe will be shared at the meeting.

Like all projects forming part of the overall investment, the designs follow extensive consultation.

The council investment means people in most parts of Swansea won’t have to travel more than two miles to reach a new or upgraded wheeled sports facility.

Cllr Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “We understand how popular skateboarding, BMXing and other wheeled sports are in Swansea.

“This is why we’re investing so heavily in new or improved facilities right across the city for the benefit of our young people and wheeled sports enthusiasts of all ages.

“The meetings planned for next week will give people an update on where we are with the overall investment as we continue to work closely alongside experts at Curve Studio to deliver the kind of high-quality facilities that meets people’s needs and aspirations.

“If a new or improved facility is planned for your community, it’s worth attending to contribute or get an in-person update.”

Work contracts will also soon be awarded to deliver skate park improvements at both Mynydd Newydd in Penlan and the Phoenix Centre in Townhill.

Completed projects include major improvements to the wheeled sports facilities at Coed Bach in Pontarddulais and Melin Mynach in Gorseinon.

A small cycling facility is also planned for Blaenymaes, as well as a pump track in Bishopston, the refurbishment of the existing pump track at Clyne Valley and the addition of a junior pump track at Gorseinon.
