New number plate system introduced at Newport’s Kingsway car park

If you use Kingsway or Park Square car parks regularly, then you need to know about changes Newport Council are making to the way you access and use these car parks.
From this week drivers looking to park at Kingsway car park will no longer receive a paper ticket when they stop at the entry barriers.

Instead, your vehicle’s number plate will be read by our new automatic number plate recognition system upon entry.

You will then need to enter your number plate at the pay machines before you exit. Two pay machines are located in the foyer next to the shopping centre, and another is on level -1, near the exit of the car park. All machines take cash, card and contactless payment options.

In the event that you forget to pay at the machine, the exit barriers are also able to take card payments.

It is essential that you remember your number plate, or note it down somewhere handy, as you will need it to pay for your parking and exit, and may need it to re-enter the car park on foot.

Roller shutter doors have also been installed at Kingsway, which will help reduce unauthorised entry to the car park.

These doors will open automatically when a vehicle approaches at both the entry and exit points. They are similar to those used in other multi-storey car parks, and additional signs are being provided to inform drivers to approach the doors slowly.

The roller doors can be opened physically in the event of a power failure, and have in-built safety measures to stop them closing on an obstruction.

The pedestrian doors to the car park have also had new keypads installed, which can be opened by inputting the number plate of your vehicle. This will also help reduce unauthorised use of the car park.

The council is also working to introduce these changes to Park Square car park, and is busy upgrading machines and systems there in preparation for the change, which should go live in the next few weeks.

The council has said that it has no plans to introduce these changes at any of its other car parks.
