Barbara who works as a Senior Healthcare Assistant working with the Powys team in the Community Nursing Service, is also a member of the Newtown Fundraising Group for the charity.  She was presented with the Going the Extra Mile award.

Barbara has worked in the team for 8 years, having previously worked as a carer support worker with Crossroads Care. Her family had also received support from Marie Curie Nurses when her mum was terminally ill.

Barbara provides overnight planned care to patients and their families from 10pm to 7am in Powys.   She was nominated by colleague Sarah not only for the support she provides to families, but also for the personal support she has provided to her and other colleagues.

The nationwide awards, now in their sixth year, were set up with the generosity of The Peacock Charitable Trust and give Marie Curie a unique opportunity to showcase the excellent care and dedication demonstrated by staff across the charity. This year, with the support of the Schofield family, there are two new awards recognising the work of Allied Health Professionals and Support Workers.

The awards celebrate both teams and individuals who are nominated by their colleagues for consistently showing commitment to delivering the best care and support to people living with a terminal illness and support for their family and friends, and for going the extra mile in their role.

    Award winner Barbara, said:

“I’m still coming down from Cloud Nine. It is an honour to receive such a prestigious award from my colleagues.   My husband and I really enjoyed the whole event in the fabulous setting of the RCN building.”

Julie Pearce, Executive Director of Nursing, Allied Health Professionals and Quality, said:

“Everyone had a wonderful time at the awards and it was an honour to present Barbara with the Going the Extra Mile award for all of her work. The Peacock Awards gives not only me, but the charity, an opportunity to recognise the exceptional contributions from Marie Curie staff, who provide care and support to so many people with a terminal illness and their loved ones throughout the year.”
