Newport City Council is celebrating after being recognised for a second year running at the recent Welsh for Adults Gwent awards.
The council received the Work Welsh award, in recognition of our Cymraeg Gwaith scheme, having been awarded Employer of the Year at last year’s awards.
The scheme is a partnership between the council, Welsh for Adults Gwent at Coleg Gwent, and the National Centre for Learning Welsh.
The aim of Cymraeg Gwaith is to strengthen Welsh language skills in workplaces across Wales, offering diverse, flexible, fully funded training to employers.
In the previous academic year, 64 members of staff were enrolled in courses through the scheme, and they will be starting a further two courses in January.
Councillor Jason Hughes, joint cabinet member for communities and sport with responsibility for the Welsh language, joined Councillor John Harris, the council’s Welsh language champion, and council staff who are part of the scheme at the awards ceremony in Llanhilleth last month to collect the award.
“It’s brilliant that Welsh for Adults Gwent has once again recognised our commitment to promoting and embedding the Welsh language in our workplace.
“Through Cymraeg Gwaith we will continue to develop our staff, and ensure that our workplace is one in which Welsh thrives.
“I’d like to thank our partners for their support in delivering the scheme, and say dal ati to our staff who are learning Welsh through the scheme – their achievements have been superb to see.”
