The work will make it easier and safer for walkers, wheelers and cyclists to travel around the area. It also makes it easier and safer for people to travel from Crindau and Caerleon into the city centre, upgrading the existing National Cycle Network route in this area.
The work has also seen improvements made to active travel links with Crindau primary school, making it easier for parents and pupils to walk, wheel or cycle to school, once the school reopens in the new academic year.
“Active travel is all about making it easier and safer for people to get from A to B, giving them the ability to make those everyday journeys as conveniently as possible,” said Councillor Rhian Howells, cabinet member for assets and infrastructure.
“Crindau is very close to the city centre, making walking, wheeling or cycling between the two a realistic option. However, we identified gaps in our active travel network that might stop people from doing that. So we set about fixing them.
“These improvements will make it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel and cycle within Crindau, into the city centre, and up the river path towards Caerleon.
“Whether it is widening footways, narrowing road junctions, installing dropped crossings, or improving cycle crossings, every piece of work we have carried out here is designed with those goals in mind.”
Work completed as part of the programme includes:
- footway widening at Glassworks Cottages
- installation and improvement of dropped crossing points right along the length of the route, from Glassworks Cottages down to the Old Green roundabout
- narrowing of junction on Albany Industrial Estate
- improvement of cycle crossing from Ailesbury Street into Aragon Street
- improvement of Ailesbury Street junction to fix and remove ponding issues
- upgrades to the pedestrian crossing points on Evans Street and Wyndham Street junctions
- widening of footway between Shaftesbury Street and Wyndham Street, providing comfortable space for walking, wheeling and cycling, with an improved transition onto Shaftesbury Street.
