A new Thermal Imaging Camera loan scheme has been launched by Cardiff Hubs and Libraries to help residents identify heat loss in their homes, improve energy efficiency, and reduce energy bills.
Residents can now borrow a Thermal Imaging Camera for up to three weeks from any Cardiff hub or library using their library card. Residents who aren’t library members can sign up for free.
The camera makes it easy to spot cold spots, draughts, and areas with poor insulation, empowering residents to make simple changes that lead to warmer, more energy‑efficient homes. Everyone who borrows a camera will be provided with an information booklet explaining how to use the device safely and effectively, as well as how to get help to make any improvements to their homes.
This is the latest loan initiative from Cardiff Hubs and Libraries, following its successful blood pressure monitor loan scheme, which offers residents practical tools to monitor and improve their health at home.
The scheme, which is funded as part of Cardiff Council’s One Planet Cardiff strategy, aims to support residents during the ongoing cost‑of‑living crisis and help them contribute towards the Council’s carbon neutral ambitions.
A council spokesperson said: “This new loan scheme is another example of how our Hubs and Libraries service can make a real difference to people’s lives.
“Residents might never consider buying a thermal imaging camera themselves but with so many households facing rising energy costs, by offering free access to the devices—complete with a straightforward how‑to booklet—we’re providing a practical way to find and fix heat loss in their homes.
“Our Hubs and Libraries are vital community spaces delivering fantastic services. This initiative is yet another string to the service’s bow – helping people to save money, stay warm, and reduce their carbon footprint.
“Taking climate action at home doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated and it can cut energy costs. These cameras help give people the information needed to inform simple, cost-effective changes to their homes – like adding insulation film to windows or installing draught-proofing strips – small green choices, that multiplied across the city, can quickly add up to much bigger changes in Cardiff’s carbon footprint.”
