Lidl GB has confirmed plans to open a new store at the former Llanwern Steelworks site on Queens Way as part of the £1 billion Glan Llyn regeneration project in Newport.
The new supermarket, which is expected to open next spring, will become Lidl’s third store in Newport and is set to create up to 40 new local jobs, with entry-level hourly pay starting at £13.45.
The store will form part of the wider regeneration of the 600-acre brownfield site, helping to provide growing communities at Glan Llyn with walkable access to affordable groceries and everyday essentials.
The development is taking place on a prominent plot within the regeneration area, which is being delivered by Brighton STM Group.
Once complete, the new Lidl store will feature a 1,334m2 sales area, including the retailer’s in-store bakery and Middle of Lidl section. Customers will also have access to electric vehicle chargers, toilets with baby changing facilities and solar-powered energy generation through roof-mounted panels.
Rhydian Griffiths, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said: “We’ve seen demand for our best value products continue to grow across South Wales, and are thrilled to finally break ground on our third store in Newport. The Glan Llyn regeneration is a fantastic project transforming the former steelworks, and we are excited to bring our high-quality, affordable products to this expanding community. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in our journey so far; we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors.”
A spokesperson for Brighton STM Group said: “We are delighted to welcome Lidl to Glan Llyn. The arrival of a new Lidl supermarket, alongside retail facilities and pre-school day nursery, will provide fantastic new amenities for the local community and marks an important step forward in the wider regeneration of the site.”
Alongside construction work beginning on the new store, Lidl is also inviting nearby schools to take part in its Lidl Foodies programme, which aims to encourage healthy eating among children through workshops focused on fresh fruit and vegetables.
The retailer said local schools, including Glan Llyn Primary School, will be able to access free educational resources through the National Schools Partnership website.
