The Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens, has held her first official call with Wales’ new First Minister, Rhun ap Iorwerth, following the recent Senedd election.

During the conversation, the Welsh Secretary congratulated the First Minister on his party’s election success and stressed the importance of both governments working closely together on issues affecting people across Wales.

The call focused on shared priorities including tackling the cost of living crisis, reducing poverty, improving public services and supporting economic growth across Wales.

The Secretary of State also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the UK and Welsh Governments on major infrastructure and industrial issues, including the delivery of clean energy projects in Wales.

Discussions also covered the future of Welsh steelmaking and the transition at Port Talbot, alongside growth funding and matters relating to defence and national security.

The conversation follows a separate call held last week between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the First Minister, during which the Prime Minister congratulated Rhun ap Iorwerth on his appointment.

The Prime Minister also offered to meet the First Minister in person next month to discuss shared priorities and the future working relationship between both governments.
