Children and families in Barry can now enjoy a modern and accessible new play space following the completion of refurbishment works on a play area in Palmerston.
The project, funded through the Welsh Government’s All Wales Play Opportunities Programme, has transformed the previous facility into a vibrant, multi-functional play area designed for children aged one to 12 years old.
The new facilities feature a range of inclusive equipment, including a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, sensory play panels, climbing frames and a five-seat swing. The equipment is complemented by colourful and engaging playground artwork, creating an inviting space where children of all abilities can play, explore and socialise together.
Learners from nearby Palmerston Primary School joined representatives from play equipment supplier Kompan and Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places Cllr Bronwen Brooks to celebrate the official opening of the facility.
Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places, said: “We are delighted to officially open the new Palmerston Play Area and provide local children and families with a refreshed and inclusive space to enjoy. It ensures that children of all ages and abilities have opportunities to play, be active and spend time outdoors in a safe and welcoming environment.
“As a Council, we are committed to making the Vale a great place to live, work and visit and this refurbishment is another example of how we are creating places that support healthier and happier communities. It was wonderful to celebrate the opening alongside pupils from Palmerston Primary School and our project partners – I hope the new play area is enjoyed for many years to come.”
The refurbishment forms part of a wider programme of investment in public spaces across the Vale of Glamorgan, including a refurbished splash pad and skate park at Pencoedtre in Barry, open space enhancements at Palmerston and Bendricks Road, the full refurbishment and extension of the play area at Cog Road in Sully, and improvements at Seel Park in Dinas Powys.
