New wildlife garden creates buzz at Caldicot Library

Caldicot Library and Community Hub has been buzzing with activity thanks to a local community group that’s created the library’s first wildlife garden to attract pollinators and birds.

The dedicated members of Friends of Caldicot Library took the initiative and applied to the Keep Wales Tidy scheme, Local Places For Nature. As a result, they received a Wildlife Mini Garden package to transform an area outside the town’s library into a haven for bees, bugs and birds.

The new Buzz & Bloom Caldicot project, as it has been named, saw the friends group immediately get to work with the package, which contained essentials including wildflowers, lavender, native climbing plants, topsoil, peat-free compost, trowels, watering can, trellis, a bug hotel, a bird box and butterfly house.

Cllr Angela Sandles, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Engagement, said: “This is fantastic example of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared passion to make a difference. Buzz & Bloom Caldicot will not only make the area look more attractive, but it will make it a real difference to pollinators, butterflies and birds too.

“I’d like to thank all the members of Friends of Caldicot Library and library staff, as well as our Grounds Team who installed the planters and habitat boxes. It’s a great example of working together – as a result so many will be able to enjoy this nature space. I look forward to seeing it grow over the coming months.”

Buzz & Bloom Caldicot isn’t setting aside its gardening tools just yet – it intends to include working with the council’s Community Education team to offer a willow weaving session for adults. The library will also offer several nature inspired crafts and story times for children, while book displays will encourage everyone to enjoy nature.

Make a date in your diary for Monday 20 July, when you’ll see local community groups joining forces to celebrate Buzz & Bloom Caldicot.

Head along to the event between 2.30pm and 4pm, and you can enjoy a performance by The Chepstow Singers and see the winners of a Buzz & Bloom poetry competition announced. There will be nature inspired items for sale, produced by the Crochet Group, a craft table, plus lots more to see and do.
