Vue has confirmed that its Cardiff city centre cinema will close for the final time today (Thursday, 25 June), bringing an end to more than two decades of big screen entertainment in the Welsh capital.

The cinema, located at Stadium Plaza next to Principality Stadium and Cardiff Central railway station, first opened its doors on 11 April 2003 and has been a popular destination for film fans ever since.

Over the years, the venue became particularly well known among students and city centre visitors thanks to its central location and regular discounted ticket offers.

Situated within Stadium Plaza, Vue Cardiff features seven screens equipped with Digital Dolby Surround Sound and offers seating for more than 1,700 cinemagoers.

Earlier this month, Vue announced plans to close the venue before the end of June and has now confirmed that Thursday, 25 June, will be its final day of trading.

When the closure was first announced, a Vue spokesperson said: “We can confirm that our site at Stadium Plaza will be closing later this month. We are consulting with our Cardiff colleagues, who are our priority, and until this point, we will continue to provide cinemagoers in Cardiff the very best big screen experience.”

The closure marks the end of an era for one of Cardiff city centre’s longest standing cinema venues and is likely to disappoint many Cardiff residents who have visited over the past 23 years for blockbuster releases, family outings and student nights.

Despite the closure, cinema goers in South Wales will still have access to a number of other multiplex and independent cinemas across the region.
