A police investigation has been launched after a prehistoric burial mound in North Wales was damaged by a vehicle.

North Wales Police is investigating an incident of criminal damage at a scheduled ancient monument on Mynydd Hirathog, near Tan y Foel.

The force said a vehicle had been driven over the Bronze Age burial mound, which is protected under the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2023. The monument sits alongside the Llansannan to Rhyd-Y-Bedd minor road.

A joint investigation has been launched with CADW, and officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

PC Dave Allen said: “The team, alongside CADW, work to protect these monuments for present and future generations.

“Not only is the monument of national importance to the archaeological community, but it is part of our heritage and should be respected.

“We are keen to trace the owners of any vehicles witnessed upon the monument and I am appealing to anybody with information to get in touch.”

Anyone with information can contact North Wales Police on 101 or via the force’s website, quoting reference number 26000484800.

Information can also be reported anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
