Ever thought what it’s like to live and work in a castle? National Trust Cymru is looking for a Facilities Co-ordinator to help care for Penrhyn Castle and Garden and Plas Newydd House and Garden, and that’s not all, you’ll also get to live at the castle.

Better still, the historic castle recently starred as Ashford Castle, the Guinness family home in the Netflix period drama House of Guinness, meaning the successful applicant will have the rare opportunity to call one of Wales’ most recognisable filming locations home.

This is no ordinary 9 to 5. It’s a rare opportunity for someone ready to take on the challenge of keeping two complex, historic properties running safely and smoothly.

Set on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia), Penrhyn Castle is a vast neo-Norman building, surrounded by gardens and woodland – while across the Menai Straits on Ynys Môn, Plas Newydd is a Grade I-listed house with glorious gardens and woodland.

And while the settings may be spectacular, the job itself requires resilience, organisation and a practical mindset. Working across a castle and a historic house means balancing competing priorities, solving problems under pressure and working closely with a dedicated team to keep these special places open and accessible.

What sets this role apart is the lifestyle that comes with it. With accommodation provided on site, the successful candidate won’t just work at Penrhyn Castle – they will live there too. Morning walks through the grounds, a commute measured in steps, and the chance to be part of a close-knit team caring for nationally significant places all come as part of the package.

The accommodation itself is a two-bedroom flat within the castle, complete with its own kitchen and lounge. The postholder will also take on the responsibility of being a key representative, alongside two other colleagues, helping to ensure the castle and its grounds are secure.

The Facilities Co-ordinator will be at the heart of that effort. From ensuring compliance and safety standards are met to dealing with the unexpected challenges that come with historic buildings. With over 300,000 visitors welcomed across the two sites each year, there is always something new to respond to.

William Sharp, Facilities Manager for Gogledd Orllewin Cymru (North West Wales), said:

“The day-to-day role will see you coordinating contractors and managing key supplier relationships, leading and organising facilities team workstreams, and keeping a close eye on compliance planning and tracking.

It’s a varied, hands-on role where you’ll be supporting the smooth running of two complex historic properties – and no two days are ever the same. We’re looking for someone who’s ready to embrace that challenge and play a vital role in caring for these special places.”

Applications are now open. Closing date Sunday, 5 July 2026. Vacancy IRC170578.
