One-way system confirmed as Pontypridd police station demolition begins

Motorists in Pontypridd are being advised of temporary traffic changes as the main demolition phase of the former Pontypridd Police Station and Berw Road Car Park gets underway from Monday, August 3.

As part of the initial works, a section of Morgan Street alongside Pontypridd Bus Station will operate as a one way road for the duration of the demolition project.

Traffic will still be able to enter Morgan Street from the A4223 in the usual way, maintaining access to the bus station and Goods Yard Car Park. However, vehicles approaching from the northern end of Morgan Street will need to follow a short diversion via Chapel Street to rejoin the main road.

The footway next to the former police station and Berw Road Car Park will also close, with signed alternative pedestrian routes in place.

The traffic management forms part of a major demolition project after Rhondda Cynon Taf Council appointed Prichard’s to demolish the former police station and adjacent multi storey car park. Work is expected to continue until early 2027.

During the first six weeks, activity will include setting up the site compound, carrying out specialist surveys and removal work, internal preparatory works, installing scaffolding and beginning the demolition of the buildings.

The Council said the town centre location, close to the road network and bus station, presents significant challenges in carrying out the work safely while minimising disruption for residents, businesses and road users.

The demolition is supported through the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme.

The works follow confirmation that Berw Road Car Park will permanently close at the end of Thursday, July 30. The closure comes after South Wales Police confirmed plans to relocate from the Berw Road building to a new town centre base on Taff Street, which is due to open soon.

The Council is exploring a mixed use redevelopment of the former police station and car park sites. Proposals under consideration include improved public spaces, a modern replacement car park, enhanced walking and cycling links, junction improvements at Bridge Street, and opportunities for new residential, commercial and cultural development.

Further temporary traffic management will also be required later in August while scaffolding is installed around the former police station. This will affect Berw Road, near the pharmacy and medical centre, and Bridge Street outside the building.

The Council said these measures will be introduced for short periods, one after another, and detailed arrangements will be announced once finalised.

The demolition work is also being coordinated with planned localised repairs to Berw Road Bridge, known as White Bridge, which will remain open while traffic management is in place on Berw Road.

The Council thanked residents and road users in advance for their patience and cooperation throughout the demolition programme, describing it as a significant milestone in the future redevelopment of the strategic town centre site.
