A three-week traffic study around Neath town centre is set to begin next week, Neath Port Talbot Council said.
The council said the study will provide an up-to-date picture of how vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists move around the town and will help inform future transport planning and investment decisions.
Temporary cameras and other survey equipment will be installed at selected locations around the town centre to record traffic movements and travel patterns. Information gathered will be used to assess issues such as congestion, journey time reliability, network resilience and the potential impact of future transport improvements, development projects and regeneration investment.
Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Connectivity, Cllr Wyndham Fryer Griffiths, said: “Traffic studies are routinely carried out across the county borough as part of the council’s ongoing transport planning work. However, due to the scale of this study, some of the temporary equipment may be more noticeable than usual.
“We would like to reassure road users that all survey equipment will be temporary and will remain in place only for the period required to collect the necessary information. No road closures are expected, and the surveys are designed to have minimal impact on people travelling through the area.
“This work is not intended to identify individual people or vehicles. It will help us to gain a better understanding of overall travel patterns and network usage around Neath.”
The study is funded by the Welsh Government through the Regional Transport Fund 2026/27 and is being undertaken on behalf of Neath Port Talbot Council by specialist survey consultants.

The road leading to the cimla by the territorial army building is a place of severe conjestion,simply because cimla has been developed with complete lack of consideration for townspeople and the impact of the increased population density of cimla and the development thats been allowed to occur,the three way lights that have been installed by griffiths’s removing the functional pedestrian crossing adjacent to the police station causes complete chaos where the traffic at high volume times back up all the way along prince of wales drive to morrisons supermarket,instead of making the traffic that leads in and out of the council building turning turn right only and give way and go around the gardens to exit as that traffic is minimal in comparrison to the main road and there would be no need to have moved the pedestrian crossing at the police station a waste of money and i would suggest a planned inconvinience for the residents and visitors of neath town atrocious planning to an extent whoever signed this work off from the council should be dissmissed post haste and the aforementioned reinstated and the minimal traffic entering the council building forced to give way and turn right only and take the alternative route around the gardens as to not inconvinience the main road and majority of traffic,a possible compulsury purchase order on part of or all of the territorial army building to make way for a roundabout to prevent the increased volume of traffic in and out of the cimla thanks to more atrocious planning affording serious disruptions to daily commuters of neath town and cimla,more resolutions ought to be found with any and all disruptions to the people of this vicinity thanks too the irresponsable planning that has taken place,we the people deserve better in a day and age when honestly we know better and nothing but tangable change will be acceptable,as the alternative is deplorable and the people responsable never ever allowed to make the same mess again.
