An historic toll gate building with links to one of the most tumultuous periods in recent Welsh history could create new history after selling at auction.
The former money collecting building, the Gate House at Llannon, near Llanelli west Wales these days is fitted out as a comfortable private home.
But built in the 19th century by the Three Commotts Turnpike Trust the former toll house along with many others in the country was constructed to collect money for the upkeep of local roads.
The tollgate properties became the target of an historical protest movement in the 1800’s known as the Rebecca Riots when principally hard-pressed farmers, faces darkened and dressed in traditional women’s clothes of the time, attacked various tollgates in protest at ‘unreasonable’ levies charged.
Now, in arguably less turbulent times, the former toll house which is currently a comfortable detached cottage, has been sold by Paul Fosh Auctions.
The property, listed with Paul Fosh Auctions with a guide price of £69,000 sold after seven bids from five bidders for £75,000.
Angie Davey, of the auctioneers, says the historic building could now experience an almost as interesting a future, if less revolutionary, as its past.
Angie said: “Set in a prominent position the cottage at Llannon offers much character and a secluded garden with outbuilding along with parking for two cars.
“The updated and improved property provides two reception rooms, a kitchen/dining room, bathroom and two bedrooms. There is double glazing and electric storage heating (not tested). As well as a secluded lawned garden to the rear with outbuilding.
“Given the wealth of tourism in the area this unusual and historic toll gate property, steeped in vibrant local history and to be sold with vacant possession, could make a lucrative holiday let or rental investment.”
Llannon is a village, community and electoral ward in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is located on the A476 road 11 mi south east of the county town, Carmarthen, between Tumble and Swiss Valley. The community of Llannon contains Llannon village, Tumble and Cross Hands.
The next Paul Fosh Auctions sale, when some 100-plus lots will be offered for sale online, starts at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 1 and ends from 2pm on Thursday, September 3.
