Road safety improvement works have been completed at the junction of Station Road and Oxford Street in Maerdy, following a series of vehicle collisions at the location.
The scheme was introduced in response to several road traffic incidents on the bend at the bottom of Maerdy Mountain leading to Maerdy Road, including a serious collision in April 2025 when a vehicle crashed into a residential property.
Working alongside South Wales Police to better understand why one vehicle collisions continued to occur at the junction, council officers developed a road safety improvement scheme and secured capital funding for the project.
Construction began in mid June 2026 and has now been completed by Calibre Contracting Ltd.
The improvements are designed to enhance highway safety and reinforce the 20mph speed limit through the area.
The completed works include the installation of containment kerbs, reflective bollards and improved road signage. An uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point has also been added, while existing double yellow lines on Oxford Street and Station Road have been extended.
All temporary traffic management introduced during the works has now been removed.
The council has thanked the local community for its cooperation and patience while the improvements were carried out.
