Children and families have celebrated the opening of the newly redeveloped Heol Trelai playground in Caerau following a major transformation.
The popular play area has been completely upgraded through Cardiff Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Scheme to create a modern, inclusive and welcoming space.
New equipment has been installed for children of different ages and abilities, with the playground designed to encourage physical activity, imaginative play and social interaction.
The redevelopment followed engagement with residents and local ward members to ensure the improvements reflected the community’s needs and priorities.
The playground was officially opened at a community event attended by Cllr Jen Burke, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, and Cllr Lee Bridgeman, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities. Local ward members and residents also attended.
Children from the area were among the first to try the new equipment, while Cardiff Council’s Play Services Team provided a free outdoor session featuring activities and games for families.
Cllr Burke said: “Quality play spaces are vital for children’s health, wellbeing and development, and we’re delighted to see this fantastic new facility open for families in Caerau. The transformation of Heol Trelai playground has created a modern, inclusive and accessible place where children can have fun, be active and build friendships close to home.
“It’s wonderful to see so many local families enjoying the new facilities.”
The Neighbourhood Renewal Scheme invests in community-led improvements across Cardiff. It works with residents and ward members to identify local priorities and deliver projects that improve public spaces and support stronger communities.
Cllr Bridgeman said: “The Neighbourhood Renewal Scheme is all about listening to local people and investing in the things that matter most to them. This project is a great example of how community feedback can help shape improvements that have a lasting positive impact. The new playground is a fantastic addition for local families and another example of how we’re working with residents to create neighbourhoods where people can thrive.”
The project was funded through Cardiff Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Scheme with support from the UK and Welsh governments.
