Caerphilly County Borough Council is asking residents and community organisations to help celebrate the area’s history and heritage.
Funding has been secured from the Welsh Government to install new information and interpretation signs at heritage and historic sites located on, or close to, public rights of way.
The funding has been awarded through the Access Improvement Grant and will cover locations near footpaths, bridleways and restricted byways across the county borough.
Local history societies, residents, community groups and other organisations are being invited to suggest places with an important local story to tell.
Potential locations could include historic landmarks, former mining or industrial sites, old transport routes, rural heritage sites and natural landmarks. Places connected to significant local people or events could also be considered.
The signs will help residents and visitors learn more about the history, culture and significance of places across Caerphilly county borough. They are also intended to enhance the experience of people using the area’s public rights of way network.
The project supports the Place theme and the wider focus on connectivity within the council’s Economic and Regeneration Strategy.
Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste, Leisure and Green Spaces, said: “Our county borough has a wealth of fascinating places and local stories that deserve to be recognised and shared. This funding will help bring some of those stories to life while encouraging more people to explore and enjoy our public rights of way. We want local communities to help shape the project by telling us about the places that matter to them.”
Anyone with a particular site in mind who would be willing to lead a project can submit an expression of interest online.
Successful applicants will be contacted to discuss their proposals and the installation of high-quality signage.
The project aims to create a more engaging and informative experience while improving understanding of the county borough’s heritage.
