Newport is set to build on its growing reputation for culture, creativity and events, with an additional £100,000 being made available to support the city’s programme next year.
The funding will help Newport City Council continue developing its calendar of events, with the aim of attracting more people into the city centre while supporting local businesses and venues.
It will also help create opportunities for local artists and performers and give residents more reasons to enjoy events and activities taking place across Newport.
Councillor Emma Corten, cabinet member for culture and communications, said: “Over the last few years we’ve seen how events can transform the city centre – from markets and festivals, live music and comedy, to literature, family activities and celebrations of Newport’s diverse communities.
“And of course this is not something we do alone. There are so many amazing organisations in Newport whose support and drive makes delivering such events possible. We’re exited to take those partnerships into 2027 with the aim of greater collaboration that will deliver benefits across the whole city.”
The announcement follows a busy programme of events in Newport during 2026.
Highlights have included Newport Music Trail, Comedi Casnewydd and Newport Festival of Words, alongside events marking St David’s Day and Lunar New Year.
Partner events have also included marathons, Pirates in the Port and a range of other community-based activities.
The city’s Newport Food Festival is also just around the corner, while preparations and excitement for Festive Newport are already building.
Councillor Corten added: “These are exactly the kinds of events that help make Newport a vibrant place to live, work, visit and invest in. And importantly, this isn’t just about attracting people from outside Newport. It’s about creating things for Newport residents to be proud of and enjoy on their doorstep.
“More details about the 2027 programme will be released soon, but today’s announcement is an important commitment to keeping Newport’s events calendar vibrant, diverse and ambitious.”
