A seven-storey development that will provide 44 council homes and a new transport interchange beside Waun Gron Park railway station in Cardiff has been topped out.
The ceremony marked the completion of the highest point of the Waungron Road scheme, which will transform the former recycling centre site in Llandaff into a mixed-use development with council homes, commercial space and a transport hub.
The scheme is being delivered through Cardiff Council’s Cardiff Living partnership with Wates Residential and is supported by £7.7 million of Welsh Government Social Housing Grant funding.
The 44 one and two-bedroom council homes will include renewable technologies such as ground source heat pumps and solar photovoltaic panels, which the council says will help reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs for future residents.
A new access road will link Waun Gron Park railway station with a dedicated bus interchange. The council said the interchange will be able to accommodate bus movements supporting routes operating west to south, north to south and west to east across the city, making it easier for people to travel between communities without needing to pass through the city centre.
Council Leader Cllr Chris Weaver and Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities Cllr Lee Bridgeman attended the ceremony with Stuart Jones, Wales Regional Development Director from Wates Residential, Welsh Government officials, local ward members and the construction team.
Cllr Bridgeman said: “Today’s topping out ceremony is an important moment for a development that will provide much-needed affordable homes while helping to build a greener and more sustainable Cardiff.”
Cllr Bridgeman added: “Waungron Road demonstrates our commitment to delivering not just new homes, but well-designed, well-connected communities.”
David Bullock, Wales Regional Director for Wates Residential, said: “Reaching the highest point of the Waungron Road development is an important milestone and reflects the strong partnership between Wates Residential, Cardiff Council and Welsh Government. Together, we’re delivering 44 high-quality council homes that are sustainable, energy-efficient and affordable to live in.”
