Adventure, the great outdoors and culture will be the inspiration for budding young gardeners in this year’s RHS Cardiff Schools Wheelbarrow competition.

The annual competition for primary schools, nurseries and community groups to design and plant a wheelbarrow has been launched by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), in partnership with Bute Park, and this year’s theme celebrates Visit Wales’ Year of Discovery.

Primary schools and groupsacross Cardiff, Caerphilly and the Vale of Glamorgan are encouraged to get involved to explore the theme and create a planted wheelbarrow to be displayed at the RHS Flower Show in Bute Park from April 12-14.

Visitors to the show will vote for their favourite wheelbarrow and the top three entries will win prizes of £100, £75 or £50 National Garden Gift vouchers.

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said:

“The schools wheelbarrow competition is always one of the highlights of the RHS Flower Show for me. I’m always impressed by the high standard of entries and how creative schools and groups are with their designs.

“This year’s theme, the Year of Discovery, encourages competition entrants to explore their favourite plants, gardening and the world around them as well as history, adventure and culture. I’m looking forward to seeing how they interpret these subjects in their creations this year.”

Anna Skibniewski-Ball, Show Manager, RHS Flower Show Cardiff, said:

“The School’s Wheelbarrow Competition is such a massive part of the RHS Flower Show Cardiff identity and seeing what the imaginations of the school children across the Cardiff area have come up with is always a highlight for me! This year’s theme is ‘The Year of Discovery’, which opens up a whole host of exciting possibilities and I am sure the gardeners of the future will come up with even more ingenious, fantastical and topical ideas for this year’s competition!”

The closing date for entries is Friday, February 1. Only 60 entries will be accepted this year so applications should be made as soon as possible.
