A FILM that looks at a mum and daughter’s experience of climate change across the world is being screened at an event in Cardiff in April.

Documentary ‘The Anthropologist’ will be shown as part of the 13th Annual Storytelling Symposium at the George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling at the University of South Wales (USW), which will have the theme of Storytelling and the Environment.

It will open on Thursday, April 11 at USW’s Cardiff Campus, with a special screening of the documentary produced by Dr Susie Crate, noted environmental anthropologist at George Mason University and the primary subject of the documentary. She will answer questions following the screening.

The film follows Susie and her daughter Katie Yegorov-Crate over the course of five years, as they travel to places all over the world where climate change is having a dramatic effect.

They work with people in Siberia, the South Pacific, the Andes, and the nearby Chesapeake Bay, who struggle to reconfigure how and where they live. In Siberia, where Susie met Katie’s father while carrying out research, Katie’s relatives can no longer farm on land they’ve occupied for generations—so Katie’s roots are also threatened by the inhospitable soil.

“I don’t think we can change the world,” said Susie. “I think that we change, and that changes the world.”

Katie’s plan as she sets out on her own will test her mother’s teaching.

The film screening takes place on at 6pm on April 11 at USW’s Cardiff Campus. The event is open for all, with no need to sign up in advance.
