You can run a cafe in a building which was once an undertakers

THE chance to run a cafe in a building which was once an undertakers is up for grabs.

A rundown goods shed on an old railway line at  Meliden, Prestatyn, is undergoing a £1.2 million revamp, transforming it into a vibrant hub with heritage, bike hire facility, and business units.

At the heart of the project will be a 60-seater café aimed at local people, visitors to the area, and the tens of thousands of walkers, runners, and cyclists who use the old railway line – now known as the Prestatyn to Dyserth Way – every year.

The Grade II listed building is set to open this year and project leaders Grŵp Cynefin and Meliden Residents Action Group are now looking to find a company or individual who would like to run the café.

Mair Edwards, Grŵp Cynefin’s Community Initiatives Manager, said: “Y Shed’s café is a great opportunity to be part of a very special project. The café will be largely fully-fitted and is ideal for experienced companies, sole traders, partnerships or new business ventures.

“The rent is relatively low for a café of this kind and we are also offering the first two months’ rent free to help whoever takes it over settle in and find their feet. There will also be lots of support from Y Shed’s in-house team who will be working alongside the operator to promote the offer and support the cafe.”

The kitchen will be fitted out to a high standard and the chosen provider will also be given a helping hand to meet the cost of any crockery, cutlery, glassware, kitchen utensils, serving utensils, and tills.

“Opportunities like this don’t come along very often. The building is steeped in history – it was a valuable part of what was a working railway line. The building closed in 1957. After that, it had a number of uses; as an undertakers run by an Olympic weightlifter, a garage, plumbers’ premises, and a storage unit for a taxi company.

“The building is being sympathetically transformed into a vibrant community hub which will also shine a spotlight on the village’s mining industries. With views

out over the Irish Sea and set against a backdrop of outstanding countryside, the location is equally impressive.  For the right person, the café offers the chance to be part of a new chapter in this building’s rich history,” added Mair.

The closing date for expressions of interest is March 28th. Anyone wanting to know more can contact Mair on 0300 111 2122 or email
