Wales-based mental health charity, Gofal, is launching ‘Not Forgotten’, a powerful exhibition sharing the memories of Cardiff residents living with dementia.

[aoa id=”1″]Funded by the National Lottery and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, two projects; [DIAL and Not Forgotten], have formed the basis of the exhibition which will feature a documentary film and an interactive display to delve deeper into these memories. Stunning portrait photographs of participants will be on display, as well as a variety of craft-based projects, dementia awareness workshops and ‘how to’ workshops offering practical advice and guidance about Cognitive Stimulation and Reminiscence Therapy.[/aoa]

The projects have supported individuals to engage in activities they previously enjoyed and explore new interests through holistic assessments and personalised support plans. These activities have helped to reduce isolation, build self-esteem and confidence whilst enabling people to stay in their homes for longer and spend less time in hospital.

Quotes from some of the project’s beneficiaries:

“I very much enjoy spending time with the Gofal staff, we get on like a house on fire, I love going out, visiting different places, and they’re great company.”

“Regular visits from staff who are warm and interested in my life past and present. I’ve been to see Jazz concerts, to museums, walks, food etc. I really enjoy their company.”

“I’ve really enjoyed the activities – they’ve greatly improved my mood”

Rob McMillan, Project Coordinator at Gofal, said:

“Following a diagnosis of dementia, people can feel stripped of their independence, frightened and isolated, hobbies and activities they once loved are or appear out of reach. Not Forgotten has helped us to demonstrate that everyone’s memories are important, and crucially that it is possible to live well with dementia.

“We see that taking part in stimulating activities truly is vital and can bring joy even if for just a few hours.

“With support of the DIAL project we have captured tales and anecdotes of participants’ life experiences and the exhibition is a celebration of this, ensuring participants’ memories are indeed not forgotten but shared now and enjoyed for years to come by future generations.”

    • WHEN: Friday 5th July – Sunday 7th July [10am – 4pm]
    • WHERE: Cardiff Story Museum, The Old Library, The Hayes, Cardiff CF10 1BH
