A hedgehog found herself in a sticky situation after falling down a storm drain in Mumbles, Swansea.

The hedgehog was unable to escape after falling around a foot down. Luckily she was spotted by a member of the public on 25 July near Overland Road with the RSPCA being contacted.

RSPCA inspector Holly Brown said: “We tried to reach down and get her but she curled up tight and couldn’t fit back through the grate. She understandably was very frightened.

“We called the local fire crew from Mid and West Fire and Rescue Service and they came to assist us to open up the drain and were brilliant as usual.

“Once she was out she was taken to Gower Bird Hospital for rehabilitation, where she is recovering well and quickly gaining weight. Once she is fit and ready she’ll be released back into the wild – and hopefully she won’t be falling down any drains any time soon.”

RSPCA Cymru is reminding people who have may have drains on their property to make sure they have the covers on or are blocked to stop wild animals like hedgehogs becoming trapped.

Call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 if you find a sick or injured hedgehog, or take it into a wildlife centre, rehabilitator or vet if you are able. Wearing suitable thick gloves, you can put them into a large, well ventilated box lined with towels or newspapers. Remember, the animal will need peace and quiet and you will need to keep human contact to a minimum.
