    Pupils at Christ College Brecon achieve outstanding GCSE results

    LEADING independent school Christ College Brecon is celebrating excellent successes by its GCSE students in this year’s results.

    The new, fully linear GCSEs are graded 9-1 with grade 9 classified as a super ** grade and 8 as the old A*.  At Christ College, 26% of all grades were 9 and 8 and 41% were 7+.

    Pupils achieved an overall pass rate of 96% with 98% of pupils achieving a minimum of 5 GCSE passes including Maths, English and a science.

    Performance was outstanding in Maths with 39% at 9 and 8 with 15% at the highest grade 9. Other subjects where candidates achieved over 25% 8 or 9 included Art, Chemistry, French, History and Spanish. In Music and Photography 43% and 53% respectively were the highest performing subjects in the school for grades 9/8.

    Best performances by local pupils:

    • Sebastian Bailey 8 grades 8/9 (Crickhowell)
    • Peter Price 8 grades 8/9 (Hay-on-Wye)
    • Llyr Thomas 8 grades 8/9 (Builth Wells)

    Best performances from further afield:

    • Sam Kang, Amelie Gauger and Jackie Chan all achieved 7 or more GCSE’s at grade 8 or 9

    Gareth Pearson, Head of Christ College, commented: “I feel very proud of all our pupils for their hard work and am grateful to our dedicated staff for continuing to positively implement this very big change to the curriculum and grading system. This is a great way to finish the year having seen successes continue across the school during the year and seeing our A level students achieve excellent results too. With 39% A*/A’s in our A-level results and now 26% of all GCSE results at level 8/9 it makes me feel very proud to be a part of this school.”

    Christ College is a leading independent co-educational boarding and day school Set within the Brecon Beacons National Park, with 380 pupils on roll between the ages of seven to 18. With strong academic provision at its core, the school provides high-quality, broad and balanced education, in a friendly, nurturing atmosphere.
